Welcome to my Expedition Blog!

A place to share adventures and be nerdy

Hi Folks! Thanks for navigating to my website and taking a peek at my expedition blog! This is my first time attempt at blogging about science and fieldwork - or anything actually - so apologies in advance...🙈 Practice makes perfect though, right? My goal with this blog is to share as many details of my experiences as possible, in the hopes that you feel as though you were at my side joining me on these Quests For Knowledge! To turn a phrase of the great Bilbo Baggins: "We're going on an adventure!"

Who am I?

For those of you I haven't had the pleasure of meeting, here is a quick few sentences about who I am.

My name is Rowan, and I am a marine biologist!

I was born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland in a beautiful wee village known as Fort Augustus, where my closest neighbor was the Loch Ness Monster. I first studied to become a scientist at the home of golf (Saint Andrews, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿) before moving to the fantastically-flat, home of corn (Ohio, USA 🇺🇸 ) for grad school.

I absolutely love my job! When I was a little, I dreamed of being a marine biologist - swimming with sharks, SCUBA diving into ship wrecks, splashing with turtles - but I never imagined in a million years that that would actually be my job one day.

Join the adventure and ask questions!

As I write this first blog post, I am 4 days away from going to Antarctica for a 3-month science expedition! I am so excited to share this experience with you all. I am going to try and write something everyday (internet- and sleep-dependent!) so if you have any questions or want to know more about a certain aspect of the journey - please post in the comments section below!

I will also post to social media - so please follow me on Twitter!
